The History Center, which became Hillsborough County’s first publicly owned LEED-certified “green” building, exemplifies a commitment to environmental sustainability. The History Museum of Hillsborough County was founded in 1989 by prominent local Tampan, J. Thomas Touchton, who had a vision of preserving and sharing the rich history of the Tampa Bay region. Over the years, the museum’s journey has been marked by multiple relocations. Initially, the museum was housed within a convention center before it found a temporary home at Fort Brooke Park in 2009. After a long and determined campaign to secure funding, the Hillsborough County Commission awarded the museum $17 million, a significant achievement that enabled the construction of a permanent location.
