Despite the challenges, the Tampa Bay History Center achieves its goal of raising $32 million through a capital campaign. The Kresge Foundation awards the museum a $1 million challenge grant. The new museum is Hillsborough County’s first publicly owned LEED-certified “green” building. The museum must complete the campaign by April 1, 2009.
The History Museum of Hillsborough County was founded by a local Tampan, J. Thomas Touchton, in 1989. Over the years, the museum has moved two times. The first was to a convention center and was later relocated to Fort Brooke Park in 2009. After a long battle to obtain funds, the Hillsborough County Commission awarded the museum $17 million to construct a permanent location.
